SWOT Analysis SWOT Analysis for Strategic Plan for Unmet Social Needs of Adults Suffering from Mental Illness Ivy Garrett Walden University NURS 6241-5: Strategic Planning in Health Care Organizations April 12, 2020 SWOT Analysis Frequent visitors to the psychiatric emergency room are a small subgroup of patients, but they are responsible for many visits and thus demand significant resources. Their needs are often left unmet, and their frequent visits reflect their frustration as well as that of psychiatric emergency room staff (Schmidt, 2018). SWOT Analysis The SWOT Analysis is used to make the most of the tools that a company has at its fingertips and to their full advantage. SWOT analysis can help to reduce the chances of failure, to understand what is lacking, and to eliminate the hazards that would otherwise be hidden (MindTools.com, 2020). Strengths The strengths that were identified for the unmet social needs of the mentally ill adult are: • Adequate knowledge of the mental health population • Several studies conducted to address unmet social needs of the mental health population These strengths are essential to this project because the adult mental health population has been a widely studied topic for several years. Weakness The weakness of the course project: • Limited access to mental health treatment. • Data may be difficult to obtain due to patients’ unwillingness to participate. Among people seeking mental health care, access to face-to-face services is a higher priority than access to medication. Ninety-six million Americans had to wait for psychiatric health care for more than a week. And almost half of Americans had to or met someone who SWOT Analysis had to travel to receive treatment for more than an hour round trip (National Council for Behavioral Health, 2020). Individuals living in rural areas are less likely than people residing in urban and suburban areas to proactively pursue mental health services they need and go to their primary care provider or neighborhood treatment center. Rural Americans still have less knowledge of mental health and treatment programs (National Council for Behavioral Health, 2020). Opportunities The opportunities for the course project: • Focuses on prevention and promotes mental health across the lifespan, • Brings together individuals, communities, and a variety of systems (health, human services, schools, etc.) to work collaboratively toward better mental health for all. The Mental Health Gap Action Program emphasizes both the development of political commitment and policies and appropriate clinical interventions. Providers are developing alliances to close the gap to improve the physical and mental health of their patients and to reduce the cost of healthcare (Finnegan, 2016). Threats The threats of course project: • Lack of cooperation from other outside agencies • Lack of funding Intervening, at the first sign of symptoms, offers the best opportunity to make a significant, positive difference in both immediate and long-term outcomes for people affected by mental health issues (Watson, 2013). SWOT Analysis Services are not enough to meet the needs of people later in life. Attention should be paid to identifying and engaging older patients who require behavioral support services. Older adults require different treatment responses and support, such as transportation, home-based treatment options, and specialized outreach efforts (Watson, 2013). Conclusion SWOT analysis, a preliminary decision-making technique, is one of the strategic planning tools that help institutions managers assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of any business enterprise. The objective of the SWOT analysis is, firstly, to assess environmental opportunities and threats and, secondly, to assess the system’s internal strengths and weaknesses. The SWOT model offers a systematic framework for recognizing these factors and for selecting a strategy to determine the best symmetry between them. SWOT Analysis References Clay, R. (2009, June).
