1 Nursing Evolution Kevin Carbonell Fuentes West Coast University NURS 306 Professors Maria Perez 1/9/2021 2 The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has nine essential principles that prepare and determine the professional practice of a Registered Nurse. These principles relate to one another in different aspects. The liberality of BSN education allows nurses to be equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to perform versatile functions in their profession and society. Nurses are equipped with leadership skills to facilitate them in the efficient performance of the nursing profession. They, therefore, create a conducive patient-nurse relationship. Great leadership skills improve their communication, managerial skills, and decision-making skills. The third essential of BSN education states, “Professional nursing practice is grounded in the translation of current evidence into one’s practice,” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). This means that nurses are equipped with the skills necessary to observe, understand, and analyze evidence-based research data to assist them in their profession. Nurses are educated on technological advancements and information to enable the delivery of quality health care to patients and the facilities’ running in line with their profession. Health Care Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments affect the healthcare delivery system either directly or indirectly. Nurses are guided and educated on understanding these aspects to understand the functions of the healthcare systems and aspects governing them (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). They are also educated to stay current with changes in these aspects. Nurses are equipped with interprofessional communication and collaboration skills to enable smooth operation of the health care system—this aids in an organized and quality delivery of services to patients. Nurses are equipped with community health nursing skills to create health awareness and disease prevention. This helps in improving the health status of individuals and the community. The 8th essential of BSN education states, 3 “Professionalism and the inherent values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice are fundamental to the discipline of nursing,” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). This describes that nurses are obliged to maintain professionalism and professional nursing value at all times. The ninth essential of BSN education states, “The baccalaureate graduate understands and respects the variations of care, the increased complexity, and the increased use of healthcare resources inherent in caring for patients,” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). This means that nursing education prepares nurses to have general knowledge in working with individuals, families, groups, communities, and the whole population. Role of Communication Communication plays a critical role in nursing practice. A nurse must have enhanced communication skills to maintain a strong patient-nurse relation during the first introductory messages. This allows for a comfortable environment for the patient to effectively describe and express their feelings allowing for effective patient healthcare. Interdisciplinary communication skills in of much importance in the healthcare industry: nurses and other healthcare professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to enable a healthy collaboration to facilitate efficient service delivery to the patients and an understanding between the health professionals (Nies, 2019). Effective communication skills enable the nurse to understand their patients’ social, cultural, and economic situations and community facilitating them to develop diverse understanding and communication. 4 Leadership Nurses go through an education system that prepares them with the necessary leadership skills and skills necessary to understand health policies that govern their profession. Through leadership, nurses can influence the policies governing their profession. An example of a leadership-oriented service is Team Reach Out, which focused on the knowledge they learned to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina (Nies, 2019). They collaborated with other international organizations and worked together assisting these victims. They eventually expanded their outreach to South Africa. In conclusion, the nursing profession prepares nurses with diverse skills they need in and out of their profession to serve their community. The benefits of getting a BSN degree exceeds the need for employment and job security.
