Scenario

You are applying for positions as a new BSN nurse and seeking a position that fills your passion and enthusiasm for leveraging emerging healthcare technologies. Your current nurse manager at Healing Spaces Hospital has encouraged you to apply for the internal nurse informaticist position on the oncology unit. You enjoy working at this hospital and appreciate the private, non-profit nature in the small, rural community. The qualifications do ask for applicants to have a certification in Nursing Informatics or a Master’s degree but it does have a grace period for those willing to get one of these advancements. Therefore, you have gone ahead and submitted the application and submitted a letter of reference from your nurse manager and current nursing informaticist on your unit. You received an email that your application has been accepted and you are scheduled for a panel interview with nursing leaders next Friday at noon.

Instructions

You have received a packet of panel interview questions to come prepared with answers to show how you would fill this Nursing Informatics role. You must creatively address the scenario questions using support from credible evidence within the field of nursing informatics. Using a Word document answer the following four interview questions:

  • Our hospital is considering purchasing innovative technology to support staffing and patient flow in the oncology unit, what would you recommend and why?
    • Support your choice with current evidence
  • You need to design a policy for ethical use of clinical information systems. What would you propose for this policy?
    • Support your choice with current evidence
  • We are considering purchasing technology to support patient education and decrease re-admissions in the cardiology unit, what would you recommend and why?
    • Support your choice with current evidence
  • Healing Spaces would like to increase our technological security to increase patient safety, specifically protecting PHI. What technological security measures do you feel are most important to consider and why?
    • Support your choice with current evidence INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE

Running head: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE Innovative Technology in Healthcare Rasmussen University Ashley Shearer NUR3472CBE 3/14/21 1 INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE 2 INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE Technology should be viewed as an integrating and divisive element in hospitals that should be diffused through the hospital to enhance decision-making. This technology should have four key features to be effective: assessment, planning, acquisition, and management. Technologies such as electronic health records can help pool resources. Electronic health records enhance collaboration and effective communication to improve medical staff’s coordination assigned to a particular patient (Balestra, 2017). Technologies such as Telehealth should be implanted to increase patient-centered care through increased compliance and communication between the medical practitioners. However, the technologies can have adverse effects on patients. For instance, when nurse practitioners turn away to use the EHR or EMR, patients may feel ignored. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE
Hence, communication barriers and other innovative technology issues in healthcare may include patient privacy and security risks. Thus caution should be taken to ensure that patient privacy is not violated; for instance, this could lead to the violation of HIPAA. Care should be taken to reduce liabilities and ethical problems. For example, increased use of electronic health records may contribute to increased errors and malpractice liability resulting from copying and pasting patient information, late entries, and changes, or ignoring clinical decision support for nursing practitioners (Ozair et al., 2015). INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE
Technology should be used due to its increased advantages over traditional methods of patient care and management. For instance use of electronic health records in the oncology unit can help reduce wrong prescriptions, doses, or procedures. The technology can be connected to drug banks and pharmacies and hence prohibit drugs that can adversely affect the patient. Being cost-effective, increasing speed-data transfer, and reducing storage space can help provide vital INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE patient information access. The hospital should protect patient information through encryption keys that are accessible to dedicated members of the hospital only. This way, when the information is compromised, it would remain useless to attackers (McBride et al., 2018). INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE
Medication errors should also be monitored through the integration of a simple user interface. For instance, checkboxes for drug amounts should be placed at a distance from drug ordering checkboxes or pop-up boxes. 3 INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE 4 References Balestra, M. L. (2017).
