Module 05 Discussion – Why Does the DEA Reclassify Drugs?
The DEA can change or remove a controlled substance from a drug schedule if it receives evidence that it is in the inappropriate schedule. This has happened many times over the last several years with drugs such as Hydrocodone, Tramadol, and most recently medications containing Cannabidiol (CBD). Examine the reasons why the DEA would choose to reschedule a drug and discuss the following concepts:

Do you think increasing the schedule on a drug helps control overuse without preventing patients who actually need it from getting the medication?
Do you think changing the schedule of one drug just shifts abuse to something else? Why or why not?
There are some drugs that are currently controlled only at a state level (gabapentin, pseudoephedrine). Do you think those states are jumping the gun or is the DEA falling behind? 150 to 200 words maximum response.
