PDCA stands for planning the change, doing or testing the change, checking or analyzing the test, and acting on the results of the test (Shaw & Carter, 2019, pg. 24). This model was more recently modified to the PDSA model. Here, the “checking” step was replaced by “studying”, which more accurately describes how PI professionals and teams learn from their tests instead of just observing them. This newer model is the basis of all QI and PI projects in healthcare today (Shaw & Carter, 2019, pg. 25). Cyclical models dominate the healthcare QI sphere because it is assumed that healthcare facilities will always be attempting to improve one process or another. Because of the cyclical structure, PI is never complete; not even a specific project is ever complete. “Completed” PI projects are constantly being monitored and maintained, and if that project works well, it can be recycled and applied to other areas. PI in itself is a constant process, so it only makes sense that the models for improvement are constant as well. Shaw, P. L., & Carter, D. (2019). Quality and performance improvement in healthcare (7th ed.). AHIMA. Shayla Moore posted This page automatically marks posts as read as you scroll. Adjust automatic marking as read setting When breaking down any business, it is important to comprehend the baseline of how it functions. The healthcare industry has used multiple intricate processes to seek the process that follows the best practices in order to improve quality and raise their standards. One particular process that has optimized results is plan, do, check, act (PDCA). PDCA is a cyclical model, meaning it is a repeatable cycle that focuses on performance improvement. This works best in the healthcare industry due to the structure enhancing learning capabilities, allowing room for improvement, and the organization can asses the quality given to its patients and providers. Further breaking down PDCA, individuals can dive into how they wish to change their organization using strategic planning, what actions can be done to achieve the change with a test, analyzing the actions provided with said test, and acting on the results. Over time, research has been conducted and provided a new cyclical model to be more promising, PDSA. The only change from the previous model is to study instead of check. Permitting any organization to better learn from mistakes and grow with the change. PDSA has raised standards displaying effective and efficient performance improvement throughout the healthcare industry. References: Shaw. (2018).
