Big picture: Write a four-five reflection paper. For this assignment, you will jot down your reflections as you work through the Baird Decision Model™ that is based upon Lonergan’s work. The model is pictured on Page 2 of this document.

The paper should demonstrate that you have thought through the strengths, challenges, and opportunities of your primary ethical lens as determined by your ELI results. After writing that section of the paper, write your own personal code of ethics, where you describe the values that are the most important to you and the specific behaviors that flow from those values.

Details: As you write your personal code of ethics:

1. Keep the statement simple and clear. Make sure you use words that you understand and have meaning for you.

2. Keep your statements positive: focus on your strengths and your ethical aspirations.

3. Your statement should touch upon who you are (your character) and the values that have a significant and/or positive impact on your life.

4. Include behaviors and character traits that you consider particularly important or ones you want to develop further.

Formatting, referencing and grammar

5. Citations and references to credible media are a vital part of this assignment. Citations need to include the author(s) last name and the date. For any direct quotes, the citation must also include the page or paragraph number (for webpages). References need to include the author(s) last name and first initial, date of the publication, title of the media and where it may be found, ie journal, book chapter, video, etc. Include the URL if possible.

6. Please carefully edit your work as points will be deducted for grammatical and formatting errors.

7. Submit work in a double-spaced WORD document. Use Calibri font, size 12 and 1” margins. Include a title page with the document and page numbers, upper right. Not counting the title page or reference list (on a separate page please), the narrative should be 4

Questions for Reflection Using the Baird Decision Model (based upon Lonergan’s work)

Characteristic Explanation

Be attentive Given that we have long lists of values, what specific values resonate with you? How were your values formed? Through family, friends, faith, etc.? What behaviors are important as you live into your values?

Be intelligent What values take priority when you have to choose and your values are in conflict? What commitments (religious, philosophical, and/or personal) serve as the basis for shaping your value priorities?

Be reasonable Rights/Responsibilities Lens: What principles are important for you to follow?

Results Lens: What ideal goals (e.g. justice, autonomy, independence) are important for you to use in your life?

Relationship Lens: How do your actions, habits, behavior, and character traits affect the relationships in your life?

Reputation Lens: What virtues are important for you to develop as you build your character?

Be responsible What commitments serve as the basis for shaping your relationships? What personal approach do you take to help you answer and deal with ethical questions? How do you manage situations that are unaligned your ethics?

Be reflective How do you assure that you build ethical awareness? How do you work to assure consistency in your ethical values? How do you avoid ethical blind spots?
