The four domains comprising the metaparadigm are person, environment, health, and nursing (Subrata & Phuphaibul, 2019). This paper aims to define the domains of nursing metaparadigm professionally and personally. It also targets to compare the philosophies of Miami Dade College Benjamin Leon School of Nursing (BLSON) and a tertiary-care hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital (MJMH). The final section will entail my nursing philosophy, reflection, and a summary of the most salient points. Definitions of the Four Domains According to Subrata & Phuphaibul (2019), Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing theory and training, first identified the domains of health, man, environment, and nursing. Jacqueline Fawcett, a professor of Nursing, eventually conceptualized the domains into health, person or human being, environment, and nursing. Nightingale defined ‘person’ as the individual to whom nurses perform tasks while manipulating the patient’s environment to promote recovery (Alligood, 2018). Moreover, Nightingale advocated for the consideration of an individual’s preferences. Nightingale defines health as a state of well-being. She further argues that disease is a reparative process. Thus, health entails utilizing the available resources to prevent disease. Nightingale built her theory on the environment, which she described as the physical elements surrounding a patient. Smith (2019) cite that Nightingale stressed the importance of clean air, 3 proper drainage, cleanliness, lighting, and pure water in promoting health. Nightingale believed nursing to be every woman’s ability to care for someone’s health, whether sick or well. Through her vast experience, the theorist believed in a framework that centers on the patient, whose health can be restored through environmental manipulation by the nurses (Alligood, 2018). Personalized Definitions of the Domains The analysis of the domains by the nursing theorists has provided me with a better understanding of nursing philosophy. In my opinion, nursing entails not only the provision of care but also guidance on good health practices. Hence, advice on healthy diets and generally adopting a healthy lifestyle will ultimately keep disease at bay. I believe that the environment constitutes all the aspects surrounding an individual. In addition to the physical surroundings, family, social relationships, societal beliefs, and cultural norms also make up the environment. I define health as a state of physical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional wholeness. For instance, an individual may be seemingly physically well but emotionally disturbed. Moreover, the psychological perception of a person’s state contributes significantly to their wellbeing. Lastly, my definition of a ‘person’ includes all the facets that make up an individual. I visualize a person regarding their spiritual and cultural beliefs, principles, needs, and preferences. Patient care should consider an individual’s preferences to ensure optimal care. Because I believe that a patient’s needs, preferences, and environment matter, I aim to provide the best-personalized care and education to patients and their families to promote good health and wellness. Analysis of Institutions Philosophy statements promote motivation and commitment to one’s core beliefs. The two institutions analyzed here are BLSON and MJMH. The philosophy of BLSON is to 4 transform lives through education that is empirical, accessible, and of high quality (BLSON Student Handbook, 2021). On the other hand, Jackson Memorial Hospital intents to improve the community’s health by providing single and high-quality care for the local inhabitants. Both institutions are committed to producing the best outcome, one as a learning institution and the other as a health institution. Despite being in different disciplines, both institutions believe in providing only the best quality services to their clients. Additionally, both offer person-centered services that are open to the entire community. While BLSON focuses on the student’s learning needs, MJMH is engrossed in a patient’s health needs. Nevertheless, the two institutions are more similar than they contrast. Summary In summary, the nursing profession is an art and science that incorporates theoretical findings into actual practice to ensure optimal patient outcomes (Smith, 2019). Indeed, the meta paradigms form an integral part of directing the nursing practice. High-standard patient-centered care and a conducive environment interact to ensure the best healthcare services (Alligood, 2018). My philosophy corresponds with that of BLSON and MJMH in that the aim is to provide the best-personalized services to ensure excellent outcomes. Reflection It has come to my realization that patient care does not solely rely on the nurse but that the patient also has an essential part. I identify more with patient-centered care and acknowledge the importance of an excellent patient-caregiver relationship. My nursing philosophy will enable me to be more responsible and confident in my service to humanity.
