American General Hospital (AGH) American General Hospital (AGH) is a 180-bed acute care (Level 2) facility in a busy community “somewhere” in the state of New Hampshire. AGH’s mission is to provide exceptional, compassionate, clinical care and to collaborate with patients and families to meet the health care needs of the community. They offer outpatient services for laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and therapies (PT, OT, Speech, Behavior), as well as primary care for pediatrics and adults cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, psychiatry, EENT, and general surgery. The PACU has 12 bays; the OR has 8 suites. In-patient services include those above as well as specialty MD consults and a part-time play therapist for the pediatric unit. Details of the patient units are described below. There are 8 patient units.

1. The non-trauma, 16-bay emergency room is equipped with one triage space, 3 pediatric bays, 3 closed isolation rooms, and 10 exam/treatment spaces.

2. Intensive Care Unit – This 12-bed unit cares for all critical patients 3. Maternity, Labor & Delivery – This 15-bed unit includes mother-child care throughout labor,

delivery, and postpartum. 4. Step Down Unit – This 25-bed unit receives patients transferred from the ICU. They may take

overflow of patients from the M/S units who require multiple or complex treatment. 5. Medical/Surgical Unit (West) – This 40-bed unit receives medical admissions and admissions

from surgeries related to orthopedics and a variety of surgical procedures. 6. Medical/Surgical Unit (East) – This 40-bed unit receives medical admissions and surgical

There are also several supportive services including a cafeteria and kitchen, gift shop, laundry, supplies, maintenance, housekeeping, pharmacy, Human Resources, IT, and other administrative and patient/staff support. During 2020 and currently, operations at AGH have been impacted by COVID-19. Elective surgery has been put on hold until further notice. Census spiked October 2020 through January 2021 with patients diagnosed with COVID. It is anticipated that COVID prevalence and hospitalizations will decrease through the vaccination programs. The Board of Directors at AGH want to consider post- pandemic operations and would like to make strategic planning decisions soon. Two challenges have been put forth: (1) Should the DME policies and practices be updated? (Weeks 1 – 5 of MSN Capstone); (2) Should some of the beds (25) be converted to rehabilitation beds? (Weeks 6-10 of MSN Capstone).
