SDSU Healthcare & Nurses Discussion

Nurses are a large portion of healthcare workers, so it’s important that they have support from nursing organizations. One organization that advocates for nurses is the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA represents four million nurses and are seeking to improve healthcare for everyone (American Nurses Association, n.d.) The ANA supports and advocates for nurses in multiple ways. One way they advocate for nurses is through healthcare reform (Helbig, 2018). They do this by educating the nursing public about changing systems and how it affects both patients and nurses. Another way they advocate and support nurses is by providing safe staffing (Helbig, 2018). Balancing nurses and management together is very important to getting the job done safely and effectively. Proper staffing ensures the safety of the patient, as well as provides support for the nurses. The third way the ANA advocates for nurses is by providing nursing workforce development. They are working to open major grant programs for advanced education, work diversity grants, nurse education practice, and retention grants (Helbig, 2018). This is an additional way to help nurses to advance their education and develop nursing further overall.

Professional nursing organizations support the field of nursing and advocate for nursing in various keyways. There are a numerous number of organizations that assist with this. They each contribute their own piece to the larger picture. For example, the ANA promotes improvement in health care and setting standards for nursing practice (Helbig, 2018). Other common nursing organizations include American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), American association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN). As mentioned they each do their own piece, an example of what the AANP does is advance quality care through practice, education, advocacy and leadership (AANP, n.d) . Each of the specialty organizations advocates for their nurses, most however, educate their members, and the public about the importance of energetic participation (Mathews, 2012). In prior eras nurses realized that through associations greater change could be met, and advancements in nursing could be made (Mathews, 2012). Professional organizations also help nurses stay informed by sending alerts that can affect patient care delivery (Mathews, 2012). It is important for nurses to provide the best possible care for their patients. This can be helped since the organizations are offering ways to stay in communication with their members. Nursing organizations are valuable for both the nurse and for patient care in supporting the field of nursing.
