Leadership Journal: Provision Journaling provides a valuable tool for recording, reflecting on, and reviewing your learning. This approach provides an opportunity for you to “connect the dots” and observe the relationships between and among activities, interactions, and outcomes. Unlike a personal journal of thoughts and feelings, this leadership journal is a record of your activities, assessments, and learning related to this academic experience. Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week. Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of provision, including the following: 1. Practicum Activities Reflection: Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in your practicum during Topics 7-8. 2. Application of Leadership: Describe how your nurse leader preceptor influences the work environment. Consider how influence protects and values others in the work environment. 3. Practicum Project Preparation: Describe any potential or actual barriers you have encountered as you prepared for project implementation. If you have not encountered any, what could present a barrier in the future? 4. Leadership Video Reflection: Reflect on at least two things you learned from the “Servant Leadership – Issue of Headship” video. Use the “Leadership Journal Template” to complete this assignment. APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Leadership Journal Template Name: Weeks Covering: Mentor: Practicum Site: Hours Worked (past 2 weeks):___ Total Hours: ____/150 total of all hours worked up to this point Practicum Activities Reflection: Discuss some of your activities with your preceptor, what projects you are working on, and what observations about leadership you have made during the past two weeks. Points Earned Practicum Activities Reflection: During my practicum, I had a meeting with my nurse preceptor and together we came up with a plan for my practicum. The initial experience was a full day spent with the preceptor as I observed her carry out a variety of leadership activities. At the end of the day, I journaled my observations about what I observed the preceptor do as she interacted with other health care professionals at the facility. We held a debriefing session on what I observed, what I learned, and how I saw the leadership concepts I have learned in class play out in the preceptor’s activities (Koerner, 2017). We then set a date on when I would simulate the role of a nurse manager at the facility. The second activity I participated in was attending a departmental staff meeting that was conducted by my preceptor. Before the meeting, I had a debriefing session to let me know what to expect at the meeting. At the meeting, I managed to conduct a comprehensive analysis regarding the manner in which the nurse manager passes communications to the staff, including how she articulates the facility’s mission and vision to ensure that the service delivery goals are attained (Nursing Center, 2018). After the meeting, I had another debriefing meeting with the preceptor where I was able to make my observations about what I experienced in relation to what I have learned in class. I also offered my insights into staff behaviors that I deemed important for the nurse manager to be aware of. The other significant event was accompanying the preceptor as she took the ward rounds. This experience was very enriching as I was able to observe the assessments done by the nurse © 2021. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved. manager. We agreed that I would be involved in follow-up visits to see any emerging issues that the patients could be experiencing. Lastly, I participated in the evaluation of system processes. To this end, I was assigned an administrative microsystem assessment opportunity for one of the departments (Dyess et al., ). I was able to assess the administrative processes, top admissions, average length of stay, diagnosis-related groups, how care is delivered, staffing and staff roles, and performance measurement procedures. Carrying out this assessment was good for the nurse manager whose schedule was too tight to do the assessment because of other duties that were more demanding. I learned the valuability of teamwork and collaboration in leadership. Application of Leadership: I applied leadership skills in the area of budgeting. With the guidance of the preceptor, I was able to review the facility’s capital budgeting policies, as well as the guidelines used for equipment purchases. I was also able to take part in a committee meeting meant for products evaluation. I also participated in a pharmacy and therapeutics seminar. During these meetings, we evaluated cost versus product efficacy in order to determine cost-effective procurement procedures that will help the facility save on costs. Practicum Project Preparation: Practicum Project: Review of Staffing Preparation steps: 1. Determination of learning objectives. The initial step was to identify the learning objectives. These were determined by listing the specific skills, competencies, and activities I intend to address during the practicum (Hunter, 2015). I used the list as a guide when discussing practicum opportunities with faculty. At the onset of the practicum course, I wrote a learning agreement that included the learning objectives. I also considered my learning needs in relation to my project. 2. Determine the location of the practicum. I chose Tenet facility for my practicum depending on my learning needs. The Finance department, in particular, was my interest. This is because one of my objectives was to understand budgeting procedures in a health care facility. I found my current workplace to be the ideal location for my practicum as I am familiar with the facility’s organizational structure and culture. 3. Determine the preceptor I approached the management of the facility to request for a mentor. I was assigned one of the relief charge nurses. I was then required to sign a contract with the facility stipulating the code of conduct for both the student and the preceptor. I then had a conference with my mentor where I explained what was expected of me. 4. Determine the number of hours for the practicum The practicum was designed to last a minimum of 60 hours and a maximum of 150 hours. To accumulate these hours, I saved up my vacation time. Leadership Video Reflection: One important nugget I picked from the leadership video on power is to yield the will of others to your own will is a perversion of power because it is egocentric (Delhousaye, 2021). It has more to do with control more than influence and creates a false sense of self divinity. The real power lies in the capacity an individual has to influence others because of what they can offer. The other principle is that you cannot lead if you do not know what you have. To know what you have, it is alright to ask those with whom you interact to objectively tell you what they see in you that they admire. What is it you have that they would like to have? Only then can you know how God uses you to influence others. It enables you to leverage your strengths to influence others. References Delhousaye, D. (2021). The knowledge, skills, and practical experiences I have gathered have been invaluable in enabling me to surmount the complex nature and challenges associated with health care systems so as to effectively deliver care to patients and other populations that are disadvantaged in health-related matters. Dealing with patients in an acute psychiatric hospital has given me the opportunity to hone my professional and leadership skills. As a baccalaureate professional with a specialization in psychiatric nursing, I look forward to working in multiple contexts that deal with patients who have poor mental health and mental health illnesses, hence I am behooved to go beyond classroom training and reliance on collaboration and cooperation; the reason my practicum suffices (Nursing Center, 2018). Through my practicum, I have been able to actualize the theories I have learned in class by applying leadership skills in actual environments and contributing to the delivery of effective and efficient health care services to vulnerable groups. I have been able to internalize the contexts within which the healthcare system operates at country, state, and local levels, and within which I am expected to provide discharge my roles in alignment with the specific systemic structure of the health care organization where I work. Application of Leadership: Explain your place of influence in your professional life. © 2021. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved. As a psychiatric nurse, I have learned to be pragmatic in my leadership style as different situations in the course of my practicum have called for different reactions and responses from those concerned, whether patients or staff (Dyess et al., n.d.). This helps me to remain relevant in my endeavor to provide excellent and effective services to patients. For instance, I use evidencebased practice when dealing with mental health issues, both for sufferers and caregivers. In providing leadership for the management of poor mental health and mental illnesses, I use best practice approaches that guarantee patient safety, caregiver collaboration, and staff behaviors that result in desired patient care outcomes. The evidence-based methodology enables me to make informed decisions by considering not only the patients’ clinical but also ethical and spiritual backgrounds and how they affect their mental and overall health. It has also sharpened my research skills as I am at all times updating myself on emerging issues presented by bodies of scientific evidence resulting from the numerous studies carried out by health care professionals, and which have an impact on my efficacy in my nursing practice. Among such evidence-based frameworks are the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety (Koener, 2017). It provides a safety research portfolio towards the delivery of healthcare services. Besides, I have been able to hone my skills in interprofessional collaboration. Carrying out health care tasks can be cumbersome, complex, multifaceted, and burdensome to be undertaken by an individual professional. One of the current trends in the delivery of health care services is the shift towards interprofessional collaboration. NUR 674 Leadership Journal Provision Worksheet

I have learned that a single mental health problem might need the input of many health professionals from varying specialties (Hunter, 2015). I would say this is one area where I have been able to apply my leadership skills as I work with other professionals. Just as much as I have learned about their areas of specialty, I have done a commendable job taking them through the management of severely ill mental health patients, and the experience has been very fulfilling. I now understand that no single nurse can manage all a patient’s needs. Collaboration is key, hence teamwork skills. Working in a multidisciplinary professional setting has also helped me to understand to give help not just to the patient, but to the entire systemic procedures and activities. Above all, I was able to practice my leadership skills in relation to ethical considerations in health care provision. As a psychiatric nurse, I have been confronted by circumstances where I have been required to make urgent decisions concerning the administration of treatment for patients, some of which have had deep ethical implications. By reflecting on my theoretical knowledge and in consultation with my preceptor, I have been able to make sound ethical decisions that have been beneficent to the care of my patients in line with the nursing ethical code. This was made possible because while practicing at my current workplace, I have taken time to learn about the ethical and cultural climate of the health care institution and work in consultation with experts in psychiatric care. Practicum Project Preparation: Describe the goals you have set for your practicum project. In preparation for my practicum, I had to consider that due to the COVUD-19 pandemic, it is mainly virtual. I, therefore, consulted with my preceptor when coming up with my objectives to ensure that the services I offer will be as responsive as possible to patient needs and practicum expectations. In consultation with my preceptor, we came up with the following objectives for my practicum: I. Get guidelines on how to work in a multidisciplinary professional collaborative setting for mental health care provision. II. Discuss procedures involved in the restoration of the psychological wellbeing of psychiatric patients. III. Develop good interpersonal relationships with mental health patients and their caregivers and sustain a good rapport throughout the care period. IV. Plan for therapeutic interventions required by the client using evidence- based data. V. NUR 674 Leadership Journal Provision Worksheet

Implement psychiatric interventions according to the provisions of the nursing ethical code and other policy and legislative provisions by federal, state, and local standards. Leadership Video Reflection: Reflect on at least two things you learned from the “Servant Leadership – Issue of Authority” video. One significant lesson I learned from the leadership video on power is that to coerce others to yield their will to your own will is a perversion of power because it is egocentric (Delhousaye, 2021). It is an employment of control mechanisms rather than influence and creates a false sense of self divinity. The real power lies in the capacity of an individual to be influential to others not because of their might, but because of what they have to offer. Another power principle I learned is that it is impossible to lead effectively if you do not know what you have that you can offer. To establish your strengths, you can engage those with whom you interact and genuinely discuss your strengths, the things they admire in you, with objectivity. What is it about you that they would wish to rub off to them? What is it about your character that inspires them? How does it inspire them? Only then can you know how God uses you to influence others. It enables you to leverage your strengths to influence others. References Delhousaye, D. (2021). Instead, this is a place to reflect on how your observations and activities have compared to what you have learned in your courses thus far. 1. Practicum Activities Reflection: Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in your practicum during Topics 5-6. It was not until my actual interaction with psychiatric patients during my practicum that I began to fully understand what psychiatric nursing involves. I realized that initially, I was fearfully dealing with these patients as I considered them a safety threat. My training had © 2021. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved. equipped me with theoretical knowledge, but the practical experience has been very valuable. I have particularly learned a lot from my preceptor who always guides me on how to behave in given circumstances, for instance, when dealing with patients with acute psychiatric illness. I have also learned that a lot of information in the public domain about psychiatric patients is myths and stereotypes. Today, I am less anxious when dealing with these patients. I have honed my skills in developing meaningful and trusting relationships with these patients, particularly through improved communication skills. Besides, dealing with these patients has sharpened my critical thinking skill, self-directed learning, and problem-solving skills (Choi, 2019). This is because they do not present the typical prescription treatment options. Many times you have to think out of the box in order to administer an intervention that responds to a particular presentation. I have also learned how to work collaboratively as on numerous occasions, these patients fall ill naturally or due to self-inflicted damage. Besides, I now appreciate more the role played by the family in the provision of mental health care to psychiatric patients. It always allowed me to educate them on mental health, busting some of the awful myths and stereotypes spread about the condition. Even so, I realize that there is a need for further research on the management of psychiatric patients. The knowledge available is somewhat intangible. Sometimes I would feel incompetent with certain patients. Application of Leadership: Describe how your nurse leader’s leadership style affects the people the nurse leads. Do staff members express feelings of support and helpfulness? Are there examples of dictating rather than leading? Does the leader say or do things designed to “build up” staff or were there missed opportunities? As a psychiatric nurse, I realize that strong leadership is critical for the meaningful transformation of mental healthcare. The popular conception among the public about nurses is that they are health care providers. It is not yet conceived that nurses are in fact leaders in their capacities as healthcare professionals, and that leadership in nursing is an important component of the practice. A nurse needs to be a leader in the design, implementation, and evaluation of nursing procedures, as well as for effective advocacy for reforms in mental health care systems. Above all, the leadership style demonstrated by a nurse is the foremost important component of leadership. As a nurse, I work under a nurse leader. The nurse leader exhibits an excellent transformational and collaborative leadership style. NUR 674 Leadership Journal Provision Worksheet

Because most of the care given to mentally ill patients cuts across various disciplines, the nurse keeps open and effective communication channels that ensure seamless transfer of care information from one health care provider to another. Most importantly, the nurse leader clearly articulates the objectives of collaborative mental health care and what is expected of each member of the team. Essentially, she coordinates the collaborative process. She tracks progress, and consults on areas of difficulty, making necessary adjustments where necessary (Goldsberry, 2018). This has significantly improved the quality of care provided, particularly in terms of patient safety and outcomes. The nurse leader is approachable and conversant with all the care services provided by nurses from different disciplines. The communication protocol setup makes every member of staff feel appreciated and supported. In a typical transformational style, all opinions count, and all staff members are inspired to participate meaningfully in the care processes. Thus every learning opportunity is harnessed. Practicum Project Preparation: What have you learned about the goals and mission of the organization where you are performing your practicum? After learning this, did you alter the focus of your project? Why or why not? The organization at which I am performing my practicum is committed to promoting improved mental wellbeing for all individuals and families through the provision of quality mental health care, education, and advocacy. The main approach to health care provision is collaborative. It includes services by physical, mental, and emotional health. This mission resonates with my personal goal as a psychiatric nurseNUR 674 Leadership Journal Provision Worksheet
