DNP-801A-INTRODUCTION TO DNP STUDIES
Assessment Description
The purpose of this assignment is for the learners to develop the first draft of their PICOT-D for their proposed practice problem.
General Requirements:
· Refer to the “PICOT-D Selection Guidelines,” ATTACHED for assistance in completing this assignment.
· Use the “PICOT-D Question Template,” ATTACHED to complete this assignment.
· Refer to the “Levels of Evidence in Research,” located in the Class Resources, as needed for assistance.
· A minimum of four primary quantitative research articles, published within 5 years of your anticipated graduation date, are required to complete this assignment.
· While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide.
Directions:
1. Use the “PICOT-D Question Template,” located in the DC Network, to develop a PICOT-D question for your proposed topic. If you are using the topic from your Selecting a Practice Problem assignment from Topic 3, be sure to make any changes as indicated by your instructor for that assignment.
2. Find three primary quantitative research articles to support your PICOT-D question. Two of the articles must demonstrate support for the proposed intervention. List these accordingly on the “PICOT-D Question Template” and include a working link for each article.

PICOT-D Selection Guidelines
P | Population | · Choose a population that you have access to through your chosen site.
· Avoid directly sampling a vulnerable population. If your project involves a vulnerable population, consider how else you might impact care delivery without including the vulnerable population in the direct design of your project. · Make sure you can link the new evidence-based intervention to the measurable patient outcome. · Ensure you are specific enough that the inclusion and exclusion criteria are evident. |
I | Intervention | · Remember, your intervention must be based on a sufficient amount of current evidence. You cannot use the new evidence-based intervention or process without having the original research or clinical practice guidelines to support its use.
· You are to translate current existing knowledge into practice through your application of the intervention. · Look for valid and reliable tools for your intervention. You must have the psychometrics for all instruments of measurement (scales, measures…) · You are not permitted to create or modify the intervention or instruments of measurement. Developing programs and instruments is a lengthy process that requires measures for validation. Seek to use programs and tools for which you can gain permission or have built in-permissions. · Be sure your intervention is feasible. Will it create a financial burden on you? On the organization? On the population? Will you be able to get buy-in from the site? |
C | Comparison | · Always compare to current practice.
· Ensure you are able to measure what happens when you introduce your intervention as compared to when it is not introduced or before it was introduced. |
O | Outcome | · Determine if your outcome can be objectively measured.
· Select an established, valid, and reliable tool for measurement. *Cannot modify or develop your own instruments of measurement* Find them in your literature. |
T | Timeline | · Determine if you can complete the project in a meaningful way without a lengthy implementation and data collection period. You have to collect data for at least eight (8) weeks! No exceptions. Please ensure your EBP does not say it takes 16-weeks otherwise it could lead to extension courses. |
D | Data | · Consider how you are going to collect:
· Descriptive data on the sample (age, gender, educational background, …..) · The measurable patient outcome · Are you collecting comparative and implementation data? Or, is you project collecting baseline or post-implementation data? How will you get it? · All instruments for data collection must be valid and reliable. · How will you protect the data? |
