Healthcare Organization Options Healthcare Organization Options Each of the three healthcare specialization courses has a major course project associated with it. More than a report, you are being asked to apply the concepts learned to a specific organization’s needs. You can use the same organization for each of the three course projects building an in-depth work project portfolio, or you can select a new organization type for each course project, building a diverse work project portfolio. Examples of the organizations you can choose include: your healthcare employer, hospitals, multi-physician practices, ambulatory surgical centers, large clinics, managed care organizations,supply chain systems, skilled nursing facilities,home health organizations, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment corporations, retail pharmacies, pharmaceutical distributors,research and clinical trial firms, telemedicine organizations, nursing staffing companies, locum tenens physician companies, or public health agencies. Listed below are four different organization types with an example organization, sources, and possible topics to jump start your efforts. Possible topics: o Hospital has difficulty recruiting physicians and key staff. Locum tenens physicians are extremely costly, often more than what professional fees are collected. No on-call physicians risk the shutdown of the Emergency Department or Surgical Center, diverting key patients needing emergent care with great reimbursement rates, to other hospitals. A nursing shortage causes unit shutdowns diverting patients to other hospitals. o The role of telemedicine in providing physician services. o New regulations require major capital improvements resulting in an undue financial burden to rural nonprofit hospitals. They risk the financial burden or the closure of a valued community resource. 1 o Reimbursement is more heavily weighted to Medicaid given the population served. Medicaid traditionally pays less than any other payer, leaving physician practices and hospitals struggling with financial sustainability.
