· What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not?

In the United States and other countries, they are experiencing many nursing shortages due to the outcome of the pandemic. There are many reasons for this nursing shortage. These include the enrollment in nursing schools not growing fast enough, the population of RN’s is growing at a slow rate, the need for more nurses to care for the aging population, job burnout and dissatisfaction, high nurse turnover, and a shortage of nursing school faculty. (Siela et al., 2008) When COVID 19 struck many nurses were overworked and not given proper compensation for it. Therefore, this exacerbated the situation and led several health care workers (including nurses) taking a step down from their role in a hospital. In addition, some nurses decided to switch their occupation to travel nursing instead, since the pay was better. Even if other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, the need to recruit foreign nurses would not decrease. There has always been a high demand for nurses and always will be. Unfortunately, as I previously mentioned the need for nurses in growing faster than the growing rate of the total population of RNs. We never know what situations could arise in this world and people are always in need of health care.

· Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a community nurse can work toward achieving that goal.

The United Nations developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals. One sustainable development goal that a nurse can work toward achieving is number 8. This SDG is to promote decent work opportunities and sustained economic growth.  “Growing the nursing workforce locally and globally contributes to SDG 8 by providing pathways for economic empowerment through nursing education and career opportunities” (Sensor et al., 2021).

Improving health employment can help countries achieve worldwide health coverage for all.  Furthermore, it can aid with outbreaks such as Covid-19.  Community nurses can work to promote positive work environments by mentoring students and/or new graduates. They can also invest in career advancement/continuing education and join/participate in professional organizations.

As the care organizations in the United States continue to struggle with the growing nursing shortage problem, many facilities are recruiting foreign nurses to fill the void. While some care organizations have managed to inhibit the problem, utilizing foreign nurses is a short-term solution. The U.S. and other industrial nations must invest in nurse retention to decrease the need for foreign nurses and mitigate the nursing shortage problem. Notably, implementing sustainable development goals (SDG) can help address the projected nursing shortage problem.

Reasons for Shortages and Possible Solutions

Nursing shortage is a crucial problem affecting the overall performance of care organizations in delivering quality care to the patient. While the United States has approximately 3.9 million nurses, an additional 11 million nurses are required to cub the shortage issue (Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2020). Shortages in the nursing profession result from an aging population, nurse burnouts, turnover, an aging workforce, and a lack of potential educators (Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2020). The aging population needs assistance from nurses, who are unfortunately aging as well. As nurses get exhausted from working for long hours, they opt to leave the profession, resulting in high turnover rates. The USA must invest in long-term training and development of nurses to promote retention and decrease the need for recruiting foreign nurses.

Sustainable Development Goals

As the USA invests in growing its nursing workforce locally, it promotes the eighth sustainable development goal. The eighth goal necessitates sustaining economic growth and promoting decent work. The goal entails empowering nurses through education and providing career growth opportunities. A community nurse can achieve this goal by investing in career progression and education, promoting a positive work environment, mentoring new nurse graduates, and boosting professional visibility within the organization (Sensor et al., 2021). The U.S. care system needs to invest in long-term training and education locally to overcome the nursing shortage problem. Assignment: Nursing trend and issue discussion.
