PROPOSAL FOR INSTALLATION OF ELECTRONIC CENTRAL LOCKS ON PATIENT’S ROOM DOORS. Patients safety while in a healthcare facility is of uttermost importance. Whether in preventing falls, harming themselves or others, or wandering off the facility. Ensuring the safety of patients is part of the health care service delivery, especially while they are physically in the hospital or healthcare facility. Following the recent spike in workplace violence, or active shooter situation in workplaces, it is expedient that all health facilities ensure that patients are safe during such dangerous situations. The Workplace Violence Research Institute defined workplace violence as “one perpetrated by the media in which a disgruntled customer or employee takes a firearm to a place of work and shoots indiscriminately”. Statistics show that workplace homicides increased from 83 cases to 500 in 2016. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), violence in the workplace, whether it is conducted by an outsider, employees, former employees or domestic partners of current or former employees is equally as dangerous or damaging as any other form of a violent act”. This proposal is geared towards improving patient-care efficiency through the installation of electric locks on patients room doors that can be controlled from a central point on a device and accessed only by a designated nursing personnel in any life-threatening emergency like an active shooter situation. Stakeholders Impacted Stakeholders impacted by this project are the patients, nursing staff including the nurse manager or supervisor, the IT personnel, the security team, the maintenance department and the top management and finance staff. Aim of the project The project is aimed at ensuring the safety of patients and other staff members in an active shooter situation in the hospital, to improve patient-care efficiency. These electronic locks can only be activated from a central point accessible to a designated nursing staff member on every shift. Benefit of big data as part of a clinical system
The identity of the nursing staff member responsible for activating the lock system will be kept confidential on every shift. If this lock is activated, other linked communication systems such as the electronic boards or screens in patient’s rooms will relay information on why the lock has been activated. This will keep ensure that patients are informed on what is going on, and to relay other safety measures such as staying quiet, turning off mobile devices that may attract attention and closing window blinds to the patient. This mode of informatics will also ensure that patients are kept safe, particularly patients who are non-ambulatory; and at the same time, kept informed about the situation in real time. When the area is declared safe to resume hospital activities, the charge nurse ensures that all doors have been unlocked, and the information communicated to the patients. Outcome Patients are kept safe in dangerous situations like an active shooter in the hospital setting. “If organizations are not going to place information technology staff at the patient safety table, a nurse with information technology knowledge could play a vital role on the committee as well as the successful selection and implementation of technology tools to help improve patient safety”. These electronic keys will be linked to a central lock through a mobile device carried only by the designated staff member on every shift. Technologies required to implement the project. Technologies required to implement this project will be electronic locks installed, central lock system unit, mobile device(s) to be configured, electronic boards in patients rooms, discreet lock system where the mobile lock system is to be stored, and a bio-identity system for handing over the mobile device. Project team by role Supervisor/ Nurse Manager – responsible for access to the central lock system for all the floors. Charge nurse – responsible for control of central lock on the floor. May also be the designated staff member to activate the central lock on the floor. IT team – responsible for configuring the electronic lock system and linking it to the mobile device. This mobile device will also be configured to use as a means of communication with other staff members. Maintenance team – responsible for the installation of the locks on all designated doors. Security team – responsible for monitoring and reporting to the police and guiding members of staff and patients through electronic messages on staying safe. Nursing informaticist – responsible to communicate compliance of safety for both patients and staff. Management and finance team – responsible for the approval and funding of the project. In summary, nursing informatics will pool together people, processes and technology by managing all data available. The information derived from that added to the knowledge of caring for patients especially in maintaining their safety. Reference National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (2013).
