Ted Talk by Martin Reeves: “Your strategy needs a strategy”.(Exploratory)During week 3, we’ll familiarize ourselves with strategic planning. Strategic planning can begin only after the following questions have been answered:
Why do we exist as an organization?
What are the vision and goals of our organization?
Where is the organization going? Where will our organization be in one year? Five years? Ten years?
What should be the organization’s long-term strategic plan?
Strategic planning is an essential part of every successful organization. It provides both a foundation and a roadmap for the organization. In this course, we define a strategic plan as a “set of organizational processes for identifying the desired future of the organization and developing decision guidelines” (Stahl, 2003) and for mapping the process by which an organization will achieve its objectives and goals. Each organization’s strategic planning process is uniquely designed to fit the needs of that organization. Successful models include all or most of the following steps:
formulate vision and mission
conduct environmental scan (look at the competition)
conduct gap analysis (evaluate where the organization is vs. where it wants to be in key areas)
develop benchmarks
develop strategic programming
develop emergent strategies
evaluate strategies
review strategic plan
Most importantly, the strategic plan must be simple: well-written, clear, and concise.Strategic thinking becomes an organizational standard, playing a role in decision-making and in the daily activities of the staff. Strategic thinking involves seeking new and creative ways to remain competitive and evaluating the desirability and achievability of those methods (Heracleous, 1998). It also involves envisioning a future that could differ significantly from the present. Strategic thinking requires the adoption of a big-picture, long-term view that takes into account the present, past, and future (Hanford, 1995).ReferencesHanford, P. (1995). Developing director and executive competencies in strategic thinking. In B. Garratt (Ed.), Developing strategic thought: Reinventing the art of direction-giving (pp. 157–186).
