Writing About Psychological Research I hope this assignment helps you become familiar with using peer reviewed journals. You will need to find and read a journal article covering some topic in psychology, summarize it, and apply what you have learned to your life. Start with a topic from your textbook that interests you and has some relevance for your life. Next, follow the instructions below to find and read a research article on your topic, from a peer reviewed journal.

Make sure your article is a description of original scientific research and NOT simply a review and discussion of previous research, an editorial, book review, letter etc. Look for articles with an abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions/discussion (some of the sections may not be labeled). If your article contains those sections, it should be okay. If you are uncertain if your chosen article is acceptable or not, ask me. You must use the process below to find an appropriate journal article by accessing the online databases available through the Parkland College Library. 1. To access the Parkland Library online databases, first go to the main library site: http://parkland.libguides.com/home 2. In the box labeled Find Library Resources, click on Articles. This will allow you to search multiple online databases available through the library. 3. Chronic Stressors Discussion.

Before you type in a search term, click on the boxes next to full text andscholarly to eliminate some of the articles that won’t work for the assignment. Then type in a keyword and hit search. 4. If you are off campus, you can search as a guest or log in as a student with your Parkland e-mail log in and password. (If you are in a Parkland computer lab or the Parkland Library, it won’t be necessary to log in.) 5. You should now have a list of intriguing research articles about your topic from which to choose. (If your list is too long, narrow down your search; if your list is too short, try a broader topic.) Remember to look for an article that describes original research (look for methods and results sections in the article). The Course Guide for PSY 101 (link below) is also a good place to start for this assignment. It includes from videos and additional information about what a peer-reviewed journal is and how to find an appropriate article for your assignment. Once you have found and read your article, you will need to turn in a 2-3 page (approximate), double-spaced paper that includes the following information: 1. The title, authors, and publication date of the article you read and the title of the journal in which it was found. 2. A summary, written in your own words, of the research article. Be sure to include a description of the type of research used (Naturalistic Observation, Case Study, Survey, or Experiment). 3. Problems with the way the study was performed or anything you would do differently (think about the limitations of different research methods discussed in chapter 1). Additional studies that would be helpful for clarifying or furthering the research. If you were a researcher, what study would you do next? 4. What you learned from the article and how this information might relate to your life. You will only need to provide in-text citations and a list of works cited if you quote directly from your article. Otherwise, it should be clear from your paper to what article/study you are referring. In order to make sure that your ideas come across clearly, please make sure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors.
