Write the paper using Times New Roman font, 12 point. The paper is double-spaced with one space between sentences. Type the introduction. Although the first paragraph after the title is an introduction, a heading of Introduction is not used in the paper. This introduction catches the attention of the reader with interesting facts and supporting sources, while providing a brief overview of what will be discussed in the paper. In doing so, it should clearly identify the main points to be made in the paper (a roadmap) and include a statement regarding the purpose of the paper to engage the reader. Heading One (Centered, Bold) Write the body of the paper. Paragraphs are to have a minimum of three to four sentences. Review the rubric and include all requirements in the paper. In APA, it is customary to use headings to allow your reader to identify what will be discussed in each section of the paper. Often, the different sections of the rubric may serve as the headings of the paper. The points allotted to each section are a good clue as to how much time should be invested in a particular section. Heading Two Do not copy/paste as it will negatively affect the similarity score used to detect plagiarism. TurnItIn detects plagiarism from all sources, including papers previously submitted by other students. Sub-Heading One (Bold and Left Adjusted) An in-text citation acknowledges the work of other authors used in the paper. An in-text citation includes the author(s) and the year; for example, (Chadwick et al., 2008).
3 At times, direct quotes are needed in the writing of APA papers. However minimize the use of direct quotes; one or two direct quotes for every 10 pages. A direct quote of 40 words or more requires a block quote. A direct quote of 100 or more words, requires written permission of the author(s) as it is considered intellectual property. “A direct quote used from a text or journal, requires a page number to be included in the in-text citation” (Chitty & Black, 2007, p. 46). “A direct quote from a website requires a paragraph number to be noted in the in-text citation” (Angeli et al., 2010, para. 4).Direct quotes do not necessarily demonstrate understanding of the material, but rather the ability to copy the words of another author. When possible, paraphrase using your own words and cite the author. Sub-Heading Two APA writing does not include the use of first or second person, in singular of plural form. Therefore, avoid writing words such as I, you, me, your, our, mine, we, they, us. Use third person singular or plural in the writing of APA. Do not write “I placed the intravenous catheter in the arm of the patient.” Rather write, “The nurse placed the intravenous catheter in the arm of the patient.” Maintain the singularity or plurality of the paper. Do not write “nurses” in one sentence and “nurse” in a subsequent sentence. Also maintain the same tense throughout the paper. Do not write “the nurse injects the medicine” in one sentence and “the nurse injected the medicine” in the subsequent sentence. Conclusion The paper should include a well-developed conclusion. The conclusion is a brief overview of the paper which summarizes the main points of the paper, mirroring those points outlined in the introduction. Include what was learned and future recommendations. 4 References Angeli, E., Wagner, J., Lawrick, E., Moore, K., Anderson, M., Soderland, L., & Brizee, A. (2010, May 5). General format. (5th ed.). Saunders, Inc. Type your references in alphabetical order using hanging indents. See your APA Manual or Purdue Owl for reference formatting. The above examples are that of a website, journal, and textbook. Please be aware that programs that format references are notoriously incorrect and should not be used without verification from the APA Manual. 5 APA Quick Reference Guide The following pages from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). are useful when writing papers for this course. Inside cover of manual: Levels of heading Inside cover of manual: Basic intext citations p. 51 The title of the paper centered above the first paragraph p. 58 Example of a reference page, with word Reference in the center, not bolded. Double space the reference page, use hanging indents for subsequent lines of each reference p. 172 Is it ok to abbreviate? p. 178 Numbers expressed in numerals p. 260 Personal communications p. 269-273 Direct quotation of sources in text (needs a page number); Block quotation in text (quotes of more than 40 words need this formatting, does not need quotations but does need a page/paragraph number) p. 316-319 Periodicals/Journals (pay attention to upper and lower case, italics) p. 321-323 Books (pay attention to upper and lower case, italics) p. 324 Reference book (pay attention to upper and lower case, italics) p. 326-327 Edited Book Chapters (pay attention to upper and lower case, italics) p. 329 Corporate author, government report (pay attention to upper and lower case, italics) p. 350-352 Webpages and websites More Helpful Hints : ; – ( ) / These punctuation marks all have very specific uses in APA, which can be reviewed in Chapter 4 of the APA manual. If you are not sure as to how to use them, then rewrite to avoid the use of these punctuation marks. Contractions are generally not used in scientific writing. Example: The nurse can’t empty the foley bag at this time. Instead rewrite. The nurse cannot empty the foley bag at this time. 6 Possessions (‘s or s’) are generally not used in scientific writing. The nurse’s time management skills are excellent. Instead rewrite. The time management skills of the nurse are excellent. At the end of a line, do not hyphenate a word. Instead bring the full word down to the next line. If a group of words has an acronym and will be used frequently through the paper, its first use must include all of the words with the acronym in parenthesis. Example:
Every six months, the Colorado State Board of Nursing (CBON), conducts meetings. For people wishing to present information at the next CBON meeting, a request should be submitted no later than 4 weeks prior to the scheduled meeting date. The acronym rule would also apply to a reference at the end of a sentence. Example: Every six months, meetings are conducted (Colorado Board of Nursing [CBON], 2014). Therefore, subsequent citations for Colorado Board of Nursing may be written as such: The positions are appointed by the governor of the state (CBON, 2014). In nursing it essential to use scholarly references. Wikipedia is not considered scholarly as anyone has access to change the page.
