1)Alligood (2017) defines nursing as a policy, belief or procedure projected because of action. It describe a logical group of general prepositions used as principle of explanation. Theories describe, predict, or control phenomena. Concepts are building blocks of theories. Models involves representations of interactions among concepts depicting patterns. A conceptual model is comprised of concepts and theoretical connections between them, which collectively describes a particular relationship inhibited between two concepts. However, nursing conceptual model differs from theory because it develops ideas and state of event, whereas theories describe a particular phenomenon in nursing.

In this paper, I will provide a concise summary of Behavioral System Model authored by Dorothy Johnson in 1968. The model states, “Each individual has patterned, purposeful, and repetitive actions that entail specific behaviors of the individual (Brandão, Barros, Caniçali Primo, Bispo & Lopes, 2019). Furthermore, she defines nursing as an outward regulatory force that aim at preserving organization and integration of patients’ behavior to the maximum level in circumstances where behavior change is needed to prevent illness. Dorothy in her model emphasized on the on efficient and effective behavioral functioning in patients to help prevent illness. Moreover, a patient simple represent seven behavioral subsystems including; dependency, ingestive, eliminative, sexual, aggressive, achievement, and affiliative. The model is suitable in treating chronic conditions. While admitting a diabetic patient the model helped with basic symptoms to induce behavior change to the diet of the patient.

2)A nursing theory is “a collection of statements that explain a relationship between two or more ideas” (Whitney, 2018). These help nurses to guide patient care based off unique but similar situations seen in the past. Each theory has basic components to focus on which is termed the metaparadigm. This consists of the person or group receiving care, internal and external environments, health according to the patient, and nursing practice according to the specific theory. A nursing conceptual model is “the organizing structure that defines a theory” (Whitney, 2018). Theories are organized by level of complexity in three categories: practice, midrange, or grand theories.

Grand theories are considered more complex because they are very broad. One example of this is Nightingale’s Environmental Theory in which she viewed disease a reversible process because humans are in control of their own lives and can alter certain factors to improve their wellbeing (Whitney, 2018). According to this theory, the most important part of the metaparadigm is the environment. It can either lead to sickness or an improvement in mental and physical health. It is the nurse’s job to promote and educate clients about a healthy environment in health facilities and at home. Home environments are not always healthy, so nurses need to assess this and, if okay with the patient, assign a case manager to change their living situation. Conceptual Models in Nursing Response

3)Re: Topic 3 DQ 2

Nursing conceptual models “explain a particular way of thinking, or a mental picture of how the theory fits together, according to the theorist. A conceptual model is the organizing structure that defines the theory” (Whitney, 2018). A nursing theory “is a structure of purposeful and systematic ideas that help to organize disciplinary thinking and influence practice. A theory is a collection of statements that explains a relationship between 2 or more ideas” (Whitney, 2018). Once one understands the nursing theory this increases the focus of care which guides the nursing practice.

With working in the Emergency Room, I feel we use Dorothy Orem’s self-care deficit theory. Dorothy Orem’s self-care deficit theory consists of “assisting others in managing self-care to maintain or improve human function at an effective level” (Whitney, 2018). Patient’s come in the ER because they either have chest pain, shortness of breath, or even ankle pain. The ER MD then diagnoses the patient, prior to discharge we as nurses educate the patient on their new diagnoses and make sure they are able to function at home at their most optimal level. If the patient is being discharged with crutches, we educate the patient on how to ambulate with the crutches as well as going up and down the stairs. I then have the patient demonstrate use of the crutches. If the patient is unable to ambulate with the crutches, then a walker may be useful. However, if I feel the patient would be unsafe at home, I would collaborate with the ER MD and patient might be admitted or even have at home services initiated. I guess I really did not realize that while working I was using a theory. Conceptual Models in Nursing Response
