You will need to 1) prepare the list of questions and topics that you’d like to discuss 2) request to schedule an interview with someone working in the healthcare industry 3) complete the interview either in person (if safe to do so) or using a video conferencing platform 4) document your findings and reflect on how they measure up to your expectations of a healthcare professional. Ideally, you will interview someone who is currently working in healthcare. Cultural competency is constantly changing and meeting either virtually or in person with someone who is impacted daily by the interactions they’re having with patients, administrators, and the public. You should identify the interviewees and schedule the interview by no later than the end of Week 1 of the course. You are free to ask any questions you like, but your goal is to find out more about the topics covered in class. You should explore the areas that you’re most interested in but a list of potential topics is below: 1) The ways that cultural competence has changed over the span of their professional life; 2) How cultural competence allows them to deliver more responsive care; 3)
How a lack of cultural competence has been a stumbling block to delivering more responsive care; 4) Why is it important to care for people with different religious and spiritual beliefs from our own; 5) Examples of how culture or belief change how care is delivered (for good and for bad); 6) What are some ways that caring for people with intellectual disabilities can be different and how is it the same; 7) How has caring for LGBTQIA patients changed over the span of their career; 8) How can someone aspiring to a career in healthcare best deliver care in a constantly changing framework of culture? It is recommended that you ask between 5-10 questions but also allow room for the conversation to flow naturally. You are permitted to interview this individual more than once or simply follow up after the interview to get additional clarification on their answers. You can also choose to summarize your findings in a PowerPoint presentation or Prezi (no fewer than 15 slides/transitions) in lieu of a traditional report.
