Connie Booth manages the Adult Health Clinic in downtown Middleville. This health center provides walk-in clinic services for adults of all ages who are uninsured or receive Medicaid o Culturally Sensitive Clinical Practices
r Medicare. Three nurse practitioners, four registered nurses, and three dietitians provide most of the clinic’s health services. Area physicians volunteer periodically at the clinic. At the clinic, Nurse Connie meets Daniel Lever, a 52-year-old divorced white male. Four years ago, Daniel lost his job as an electrician for a local construction company, and he has been unemployed since that time. Over the past 3 weeks, Daniel has felt increasingly tired and has had difficulty walking short distances (walking 15 feet from the house to the car leaves him winded). Daniel decided to visit the Adult Health Clinic today because his live-in girlfriend, Wanda, “has been nagging me for weeks to see a doctor, but I think I’m just getting old.” 2 Nurse Connie would like to expand services to include broader preventive care. Understanding that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is often overlooked as a disease in women, Nurse Connie decides that the first preventive care service should deal with CVD in women. With aid from the clinic health care staff, Nurse Connie plans several CVD prevention activities. Registered nurses will host a weekly blood pressure screening, and a monitoring service will be offered on Mondays. Nurse practitioners will host a monthly cholesterol screening clinic on the first of the month. Each month, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a dietitian will work together to teach a class on CVD risk factors and ways to prevent CVD. One of the nurses has offered to enlist volunteers from the community to start a walking program for anyone who is interested in preventing CVD. The following required criteria should be explored in the case study. • How can Nurse Connie reduce Daniel’s anxiety about being seen in the clinic? • Because of known health disparities experienced by women of color, preventive services targeted at women should address diversity and cultural awareness throughout the entire program planning process. What should Nurse Connie do to ensure that the CVD prevention program offers culturally sensitive care? • When planning future preventive services, what health needs could Nurse Connie target?
