Paraphrasing is conveying the author’s idea in your own words. This does not require quotation marks. • • • • • • If the work is common knowledge i.e. the sun is warm, no quotes are needed. Quotations use the author’s exact wording and require “quotation marks” around those words. Hints when using quotations: o Use them wisely. o Remember that the purpose of the assignment typically displays the wealth of knowledge, concepts, and reflections developed from the course(s). o A page or paragraph number is always required when using a quote. o [sic] is used to indicate a mistake found within the quote. o (…) is used if a part of the quote is eliminated. o [emphasis added] is around your own comments within the quotation. o If not common knowledge, information must cite the material from which that information was learned. Crediting sources requires both in-text citations and a separate reference page (there are specific exceptions to reference page entries, such as a personal communication or “ancient Greek and Roman works or classical religious works” (APA Publication manual, P 179). In-text citations found within the paper should also be found in the reference page and vice versa. For proper use of citations, please refer to the American Psychological Association (APA) latest edition Publication Manual. (GCU, Turnitin Learning Resource, 2014). The Style Guide is also attached. When answering the mandatory DQs, there is a time out if you take too long to write. Basically, you read the info and then write your answer. Even if all the words are yours, you still have to put the citation in to give credit to where you received that info. The in-text citation must match the reference. Due to the simple fact that this class utilizes templates, submitting the template will produce a high similarity score. It is not necessary to submit any assignment in this class (only) to the Turnitin with the exception of Module 1. Just remember, if you do submit, be prepared for a large panicked feeling but it will not impact your grade. If you cite and reference everything, this should reduce the score.
