5 Questions for my nurse Manger and her answers (Am Interviewing a Nurse Manager) Analyze the skills required of a nurse leader/manager including, but not limited to: analyzing organizational culture and structure, planned change, staffing, conflict resolution, motivation, project planning, financial management, time management, evaluation of employee performance, and quality improvement of nursing care. What is your leadership style? “I am an authentic leader- My boss says am transparent, open, oversharing of information, and I plan together with my program care supervisor (PCS) and my staff” Manager 2) How do you manage your time to achieve your goals? – My workload is too much, so I group similar activities together. – I try not to do too many big projects at ones. I take some tasks home and do them in between my house task. – I plan meetings and get my stuff ready before the day of the meeting. E.g I make sure the meeting has an agender and all resources needed. – I share some work with the PCS – I only attend meetings that have and agenda and will benefit my unit. I chancel any meeting without an agenda 3) Which performance appraisal style to you use? Which one gives you the best results? – Employee review is focused on 95% positives. – I encourage employees to identify goals they are passionate about and focus on how they can grow over time – Also encourage them to choose the path that they want to use for their growth – We typically use the Performance review form Performance Review form – Reviews employee’s self-assessment – Review job descriptions and establish standards – Document work performance and outcomes – Summarizes, review any additional feedback – Review completed or pending mandatory education – Identify development plan – Verify license and or certificates if they are current 4) How do you manage resistance to change? If you were to start a change process, how will you manage staff that are not compliant with the policy. Very great question. It depends on where the change is coming from. If it is a mandatory policy, I will take it first to the operation quality committee (OCQ), where this will be brought to the floor for the rest of the staff to follow. If it doesn’t work, I will take it to the clinical action team (CAT). If it doesn’t work, I will explain the pros and cons to the 1) staff and I and the PCS will get down to the floor and make sure every staff follow the policy or face disciplinary actions. An example of a recent policy that has passed through all these phases and staff are not still compliant with is the “breaking policy” where each staff has to write their name, time break started, and a break buddy on the board at the nursing station before going on break. We are at the last phase, where I and the PCS must come to the floor and follow up with staff to make sure this policy is followed. 5) What are your strategies to promote quality improvement in nursing care? – I make sure the employees have the right resources and information required to do their job – I empower the employee to makes choices that can bring change, making them know that am always available for help and for questions. This also make them feels a sense of belonging and connection to the organization. – Am always vigilant and hold my staff at high standards to improve their self-esteem and promote independence – To promote safety, I encourage the “see something, say something, do something principle” and discourages the blame culture. We try to use the RCA to address safety concerns. – Promote teamwork and collaboration – Encourages patient and family involvement and participation in patient care You can rephrase the questions and answers to look better if possible NB: Please follow the rubric attached Textbook (If you can lay hands on this book it will be very great.
