Discussion: Values, Vision, and Mission Statements
Consider the following two mission statements:
- “To nourish the seeds of knowledge already planted within the hearts of the youth, which will grow into a beautiful and thriving tree, shading all cultures of our community, and eventually bear the fruits of a unified people. We believe in working, thinking, and planning to provide a stable and growing club and community.”
- “We are Good Samaritans, guided by Catholic tradition and trusted to deliver ideal healthcare experiences.”
Are these effective company mission statements? Can you determine the types of organizations that produced them? Having an effective framework with which to define and guide future decisions and behavior is paramount when it comes to strategic planning and marketing. Mission statements provide the organization with direction and guidance. In this discussion you will differentiate between and closely analyze the values, vision, and mission statements of a particular healthcare organization.
By the way, you may be interested to learn that the first mission statement above is from a motorcycle club, Black Out Ryders; the second is from a hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland.

RE: Discussion – Week 2
The most extensive healthcare system in the state of Georgia is Emory Healthcare, which is a part of Emory University, specifically, the clinical enterprise of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) (Emory Healthcare, 2019). Emory Healthcare has ten nationally recognized hospitals, 148 preventive care, and wellness centers, and 524 specialty locations throughout Georgia (Emory Healthcare, 2019). John Hopkins Medical Mission Statement Discussion
Emory Healthcare’s values include the following:
1. We exemplify excellence, innovation, and collaboration
2. We treat everyone with respect, caring and compassion
3. We embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion
4. We steward our resources responsibly to optimize the value
5. We serve with integrity (Emory Healthcare, 2019
Emory Healthcare’s vision is to be the leading academic health science center in transforming health and healing through education, discovery, prevention, and care (Emory Healthcare, 2019). Their mission is to improve the health of individuals and communities at home and throughout the world (Emory Healthcare, 2019).
Emory Healthcare’s vision and mission statements reflect its values for many reasons. Five cultural attributes are known as the Care Transformation Model at Emory Healthcare, which encapsulates their values (Emory Healthcare, 2019). It also has community partnerships, patient-focused care, and innovative research to improve the health of Georgian’s and people across the globe to provide affordable care (Emory Healthcare, 2019). By taking action in the communities and offering care to almost 1.7 million Georgians without insurance further demonstrates its values in the vision and mission statements (Emory Healthcare, 2019, para. 2).
In 2016, Akordeon consultancy analyzed 58 of the largest companies in the Fortune Global 500 and found that five is the average number of published values (Vantrappen & de Jong, 2018, para. 3). Emory Healthcare lists five values that have eleven specific qualities. Emory should modify it’s value statement so that it stands out from the rest of the crowd as many other companies use the same keywords as “excellence,” “respect,” and “caring” (Vantrappen & de Jong, 2018, para. 11). Emory should also consider creating an acronym to shorten its values and make it more memorable (Vantrappen & de Jong, 2018, para. 5). Emory may also consider not publishing its values like other organizations, and its staff should already serve the community with integrity and treat everyone with respect as a general practice (Vantrappen & de Jong, 2018, para. 14). John Hopkins Medical Mission Statement Discussion
Emory Healthcare’s mission statement clearly explains the reason for its existence, and it supports the vision statements forward-looking strategic goals that it wants to achieve as well. Emory partnered with Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center (AVAMC) for over 60 years, with nearly 400 Emory physicians providing care to over 60,000 veterans. Emory can improve their performance by including veterans in their mission statement. I am an Air Force veteran and would certainly view Emory Healthcare as a friend of the military if I saw that in their mission statement (Emory Healthcare, 2019). At the moment, I do not think I would change the vision statement as it is very concise and to the point of what the organization wants to accomplish in the next five to ten years. If anything, I might include the word “world” in the statement as it is also in the mission statement.
Overall, Emory Healthcare is in an excellent position to meet its strategic goals and improve the health of individuals at home and across the world.
Thanks,
Dan
