Leadership Profile

In order to be an effective leader, it is imperative to perform self-assessment to know personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as identify areas in need of growth.  In self-assessment, personal leadership style has been identified as transformational (Capella University, n.d.).  This self-assessment was identified according to the following characteristics: a major premise that develops and improves others to fullest potential, works for a group’s greater good while demonstrating traits of a charismatic role model (Capella University, n.d.).  Self-assessment has also identified aspects of contingency leadership such as relationship motivated and personality characteristics that vary with the fit for the setting (Capella University, n.d.).

Leadership characteristics that are already possessed include initiative, optimism, and empathy.  Two additional personal characteristics that are needed to become an effective leader are self-confidence and emotional self-control. As a new teacher, it was evident that self-confidence was deficient due to lack of knowledge.  As a novice in teaching, it is difficult to display self-assurance in the presence of deficient knowledge.  Another leadership characteristic that needs development is emotional self-control.  In the nursing role, self-control was manageable due to self-confidence in the role, however, lack of self-confidence is related to emotional self-control.  It is difficult to always hide frustration and impatience in times of deficient knowledge due to exhaustion of consistently learning new things and the high expectations of others.  By developing these characteristics, guidance, education, information, and influencing of others will be enhanced by demonstrating positive outlook and adaptability of change that is necessary in a leadership role (Weiss, Tilin, & Morgan, 2018).

In order to be an effective leader of any style, emotional self-control and self-confidence are essential. Transformational leaders need to portray self-confidence and control to inspire and motivate others to work for the group’s greater good.  With personal traits that also reflect a contingency leadership style, self-confidence and control are necessary for adapting to the context of the setting.
