Critical Thinking Project

Assignment Description:

There are many changes occurring in healthcare. This is especially true for the critical care units. There are large numbers of studies being conducted to determine best practice. For this assignment, you will identify and area of high acuity nursing that interests you. For example, you might select “preventing DVT in post-operative abdominal surgery patients”.

Assignment Directions:

This assignment has two parts: a PICO question (due Week 3) and a Scholarly Paper (due Week 12)

Your PICO question will be submitted by Week 4. This submission must include; chosen are of interest, critical thinking question, and method of evaluation. Once your PICO question has been approved by the instructor, you can begin writing the paper.

Scholarly Paper

Create a 5-7 Professional APA formatted paper. The minimum page limit is without references and title page.

Research a minimum of 4 peer reviewed references that are no more than 5 years old.

The paper you submit should follow APA style and format of writing.

Margins are 1 inch on all sides.

Double-space between text lines.

Font: Times New Roman, size 12-point.

Quotations: Direct quote, citation includes (Author, Year, Pg. XX or Paragraph number for non- paginated material).

The purpose of the paper is to discuss the results of your original PICO question. The purpose of this paper is to choose an area of interest related to high acuity nursing and search out the experts or identify national guidelines of practice. Discuss or compare guidelines with your problem statement.

Be sure to discuss the:

Background of your intervention or problem: What is the problem?

Purpose: Why you chose this intervention: Why are you seeking information?

Methods used to evaluate your interventions or evaluate the problem

Discussion/Results: What did you find out, is there current evidence to support practice? If not, what do you suggest?

Implications for practice: How will your project or PICO question affect clinical practice?

The final project is due at the end of week 13 of the semester.

Area of interest – Tele Nurses P (Population): At PCH in the PICU we have tele nurses who are experienced and always available to call for reference about any medical care or information. They have cameras that can access the room and a speaker to communicate through in the room as well as you can call them on vocera. They are at a desk in an office with a computer and all the resources available to help when needed. I (Intervention): To help understand in more depth the roles/responsibilities of the tele nurses and how to have critical care staff members utilize them more at the bedside. C (Comparison): Intervention to help improve competency of ICU staff in the tele nurses role and easy accessibility to decrease excess time and focus spent on looking up protocols at bedside to improve patient care. O (Outcome): More efficient bedside nursing and less use of resource nurses at bedside for protocol management and knowledge or evidenced based tasks that can be referenced through tele nurse. Question: Critical Thinking Question – How can I as a registered nurse help new ICU staff (myself included) feel comfortable and competent in reaching out to the tele nurses on duty to decrease wait time for patient treatments based off of knowledge and protocols and free up resources nurses on the floor that can assist in other important tasks that require physical assistance?? Method of Evaluation –Conduct an interview on my unit in the PICU with an experienced tele nurse about their role and ways to best utilize them on shift.
