BME 4253 Biomedical Imaging and Instrumentation Lab Final Project Medical Device Proposal Rubric The proposal can be written in a group of up to 4 members (Individual proposals are also welcome). Each group will prepare a proposal for a novel therapeutic or diagnostic medical device of their own choice. The proposal should be a minimum of 3 pages and a maximum of 6 pages in length excluding the title page. Follow standard formatting routines. The proposal is expected to contain the following sections: A. Title Page The title page should contain the title of your proposal, due date and all group members’ names. B. Abstract or Executive Summary This section should contain a statement of objectives and proposed methods. The second component of the project summary is a description of your proposal’s relevance to the problem that you are trying to address through this proposal.
Use plain language that can be understood by a general audience. (Pro tip: It is easier to finish the sections C to F sequentially and then summarize the information in them here.) C. Brief review of physiology/pathophysiology Write a brief, lucid review of the physiology or the pathophysiology related to the device proposal. Use the information available in journal articles, seminal textbooks and/or on-line resources. Make sure you cite them properly. You are expected to use a standard citation style. D. Goals/ Aims of the medical device The purpose of this section is to concisely and realistically describe the goals of the proposed device. Include a numbered list of the aims that are supported by citations, published data and/or first principle analysis. Each aim should contain only one sentence and use a terse paragraph underneath each aim if you need to write more to get your point across. E. High level design of the medical device Provide a detailed design of the proposed device. Novel therapeutic or diagnostic medical device
Use of block-diagrams and figures is encouraged to effectively explain your design. The design should include a detailed description of hardware and software components of the proposed device and the reasoning behind choosing a specific component. Feel free to identify potential pitfalls and limitations in your proposed design and discuss the strategies you would use to overcome them in this section. F. Significance of the device This section should contain the gist of the importance of the problem that your proposed device would solve and how your proposed device would improve the current diagnosis/treatment practice. You can use this section to highlight the novelty of the design/methodology of the proposed device. In general, describe how your approach differs from already existing methods. There is a video (presented by one of the GSAs, Dr. Vignesh Balasubramanian, from Spring 2020) that explains all the details with an example proposal: https://fit.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=c9ebb90a-2640-451c-8ee6aba4005e814a Grading Policy: Your proposal will be graded according to the following rubric. Each section will be graded on its merit. Making glaringly obvious mistakes on theory already introduced to you during the course of the lab will be penalized heavily. There will be fair leeway on points if your proposal involves complicated concepts and/or a complex design. 1 Title Page 2 Abstract 3 Review of Physiology 4 Goals/Aims 5 Design 6 Significance 7 Overall Quality 5% 10% 15% 10% 30% 20% 10 % … Novel therapeutic or diagnostic medical device
