Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

These people are best able to develop strategies to meet and exceed the demands of their daily lives, their careers, and their families. A review of the knowledge and skills you have acquired can provide a basic sense of your abilities, but an awareness and understanding of your natural talents will provide true insight into the core reasons behind your consistent successes. NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
Your Signature Themes report presents your five most dominant themes of talent, in the rank order revealed by your responses to StrengthsFinder. Of the 34 themes measured, these are your “top five.” Your Signature Themes are very important in maximizing the talents that lead to your successes. By focusing on your Signature Themes, separately and in combination, you can identify your talents, build them into strengths, and enjoy personal and career success through consistent, near-perfect performance. You are inquisitive. You collect things. NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
You might collect information—words, facts, books, and quotations—or you might collect tangible objects such as butterflies, baseball cards, porcelain dolls, or sepia photographs. Whatever you collect, you collect it because it interests you. And yours is the kind of mind that finds so many things interesting. The world is exciting precisely because of its infinite variety and complexity. If you read a great deal, it is not necessarily to refine your theories but, rather, to add more information to your archives. If you like to travel, it is because each new location offers novel artifacts and facts.
These can be acquired and then stored away. Why are they worth storing? At the time of storing it is often hard to say exactly when or why you might need them, but who knows when they might become useful? With all those possible uses in mind, you really don’t feel comfortable throwing anything away. So you keep acquiring and compiling and filing stuff away.
It’s interesting. It keeps your mind fresh. And perhaps one day some of it will prove valuable. • • Intellection • • Futuristic • • Learner You like to think. You like mental activity. You like exercising the “muscles” of your brain, stretching them in multiple directions. This need for mental activity may be focused; for example, you may be trying to solve a problem or develop an idea or understand another person’s feelings. The exact focus will depend on your other strengths. On the other hand, this mental activity may very well lack focus.
The theme of Intellection does not dictate what you are thinking about; it simply describes that you like to think. You are the kind of person who enjoys your time alone because it is your time for musing and reflection. You are introspective. In a sense you are your own best companion, as you pose yourself questions and try out answers on yourself to see how they sound.
This introspection may lead you to a slight sense of discontent as you compare what you are actually doing with all the thoughts and ideas that your mind conceives. Or this introspection may tend toward more pragmatic matters such as the events of the day or a conversation that you plan to have later. Wherever it leads you, this mental hum is one of the constants of your life. “Wouldn’t it be great if . . .”
You are the kind of person who loves to peer over the horizon. The future fascinates you. As if it were projected on the wall, you see in detail what the future might hold, and this detailed picture keeps pulling you forward, into tomorrow. While the exact content of the picture will depend on your other strengths and interests—a better product, a better team, a better life, or a better world—it will always be inspirational to you. You are a dreamer who sees visions of what could be and who cherishes those visions.
When the present proves too frustrating and the people around you too pragmatic, you conjure up your visions of the future and they energize you. They can energize others, too. In fact, very often people look to you to describe your visions of the future. They want a picture that can raise their sights and thereby their spirits. You can paint it for them. Practice.
Choose your words carefully. Make the picture as vivid as possible. People will want to latch on to the hope you bring. You love to learn. The subject matter that interests you most will be determined by your other themes and experiences, but whatever the subject, you will always be drawn to the process of learning. The process, more than the content or the result, is especially exciting for you. You are energized by the steady and deliberate journey from ignorance to competence
. The thrill of the first few facts, the early efforts to recite or practice what you have learned, the growing confidence of a skill mastered—this is the process that entices you. Your excitement leads you to engage in adult learning experiences—yoga or piano lessons or graduate classes. It enables you to thrive in dynamic work environments where you are asked to take on short project assignments and are expected to learn a lot about the new subject matter in a short period of time and then move on to the next one. This Learner theme does not necessarily mean that you seek to become the subject matter expert, or that you are striving for the respect that accompanies a professional or academic credential.
The outcome of the learning is less significant than the “getting there.” • • Strategic The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, “What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?” This recurring question helps you see around the next corner.
There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path—your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: “What if?” Select. Strike. Week 5 My Discussion of Leadership Profile (To TUTOR “ I am submitting to you the discussion also from week 5 tutor can read it to see what I wrote”) The discussion post’s main purpose is to evaluate my results from the StrengthsFinder assessment and briefly discuss their impact on my leadership traits.
The assessment revealed that my primary strengths, Input, intellection, futuristic, strategic, and learner, were my top five themes from the StrengthsFinder assessment results. My inquisitiveness drives me to seek information, a trait that is imperative in nursing leadership. Black (2016) reported that inquisitiveness is what fuels global leaders into managing differences, marching ahead, and spanning boundaries. Inquisitive leaders are intrigued by the different laws, time zones, politics, and languages rather than being exhausted by them and find them as learning opportunities. I would describe myself as an avid learner, and the assessment confirms this trait. It is imperative for nurse leaders to an excellent example to others helps motivate them to learn an organization deteriorates if the leaders do not continuously make improvements making their knowledge and skills insufficient (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015).
My intellection ability is also an important skill that will be useful in future nursing leadership roles. On the other hand, intellectual leadership, as defined by Oleksiyenko & Ruan (2019), is the capacity of an individual to create ideas that are powerful and would make an impact on the social, scientific, institutional, and technological institutions. My strategic strength has allowed me to look at the bigger picture in my past decisions. A strategic leader’s responsibility is to make strategic decisions while creating the organization’s overall direction and purpose. The important core values that seemed essential to strength after the assessment was trust and communication. From my experience, I have learned I, as a leader, need to trust the decisions I make to remain committed to the organization. Creating trust in the professional team can be most beneficial when they need positive reinforcement for their success. As a healthcare provider, it is imperative to create a good communication channel to ensure that adequate and quality service is provided since understanding issues helps better performance.
Being a better coordinator and more cooperative were the two strengths that needed to be improved, especially taking charge in more complex situations and transferring patients’ sensitive information. Practicing congruence and being responsible were personality characteristics that I need to strengthen; being more committed will help the employees be accountable to their commitments. I, as the leader, will enhance the employees, accountability if I am only doing the right things. In conclusion, a leader needs to know the most important values they believe in and describe their character. Leaders should visibly live every day at work with these values since they are essential powerful tools that help lead and impact others.

NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
Leaders need to always evaluate their leadership behaviors and skills. According to Marshall and Broome (2017), as a nurse progresses through his/her career and seeking a leadership role, it is important to reflect upon this/her skills, weaknesses, and strengths. When a leader can identify these characteristics, they can work toward becoming a leader that everyone values. Leaders are expected to be part of major decision making in healthcare facilities so they must encompass a set of values, strengths, and expectations (Duggan, Aisaka, &Tabak, 2015). NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
(Marshall & Broome, 2017) One of such values is a good communication skill. I agree with you that, ‘As a healthcare provider, it is imperative to create a good communication channel to ensure that adequate and quality service is provided since understanding issues helps better performance. Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another. Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our location. Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages: it is face-to-face communication. For any communication to occur there must be at least two people involved. NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
It is easy to think about communication involving a sender and a receiver of a message. However, the problem with this way of seeing a relationship is that it presents communication as a one-way process where one person sends the message and the other receives it. While one person is talking and another is listening, for example. NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
In fact communications are almost always complex, two-way processes, with people sending and receiving messages to and from each other simultaneously. In other words, communication is an interactive process. Every leader needs it to function well. References Duggan, K., Aisaka, K., &Tabak, R. G. 2015). NURS 6053 Leadership Philosophy Discussion.
