Professional nursing organizations support the field of nursing and advocate for nursing practice in a number of ways. Professional nursing organizations are in charge of the development and certification of nurses invested in improving healthcare and providing quality patient care (Helbig, 2018). These organizations impact legislative changes that can affect how nurses conduct their work which in turn, affects patient care (Helbig, 2018). Nurses involved in professional organizations therefore have an active role in changing the nursing profession and how we as nurses approach patient care. One example of a professional nursing organization is the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA strives to support nursing and improve the profession through rules and regulations as well as the Standards of Practice which describe a competent level of nursing practice (Helbig, 2018). While advocacy is a pillar of nursing, the ANA believes advocacy for nurses is also important through legislative and political means (ANA, 2021). By improving the profession and establishing standards, the ANA ultimately advocates for the patient as well by through improved patient care.

There are quite a few of nursing organizations that have a hand in advocacy and activism related to patient care. The American Nurses Association was founded in 1896 and is one of the largest in the country (Lanigan, n.d.). They are involved with improving healthcare and standards for nursing practice (Helbig, 2018). Regardless of a nurse’s status within the ANA, they are represented (Helbig, 2018). The American Academy of Nursing, the American Nurses Foundation, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center are all linked to the ANA (Lanigan, n.d.).

Another organization that provides advocacy for patience care is Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses also known as AWHONN (AWHONN, n.d.). Their mission is to empower and support nurses who care for women and their families through research, education, and advocacy (AWHONN, n.d.). AWHONN is committed to promoting diversity throughout the workforce of women’s health (AWHONN, n.d.). The AWHONN is especially beneficial for expecting families, but aims to create high quality, evidence-based standards of care (AWHONN, n.d.).

The National League for Nursing (NLN) was founded in 1893 (Lanigan, n.d.). They represent nursing education in healthcare organizations and offer opportunities for networking, CEs, and professional development (Lanigan, n.d.). It’s very important that nurses continue their education and continue in their professional development.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
