Discussion1: Collaboration is incredibly important. The operating room strongly relies on collaboration to ensure a positive outcome for the patient and a conducive environment for patient care. Gardner (2005) described collaboration as a complex concept that is defined by numerous attributes. Some of these attributes include decision making, joint collaboration and practice, goal setting, accountability, and more (Gardner, 2005). The overall concept of collaboration is a combination of contrasting perspectives that produces a process and outcome (Gardner, 2005).

Collaboration produces positive benefits through the synthesis of information provided by numerous participants within a group. Collaboration offers varying perspectives, insight, and professional ideas. Through the process of collaboration, we are exposed to a greater potential of knowledge and understanding. Barriers to collaboration can include conflict, judgement, stress, poor communication, and more (Gardner, 2005). Task: Issues in Nursing Discussion response

The most common barrier to collaboration that I have personally witnessed is poor communication. The operating room is a constant place for process improvement initiatives. More recently, the operating room at Abbott is changing their count policies and procedures to fit in alignment with regulatory standards and organizational recommendations. This initiative will involve a mass amount of communication and is supposed to be rolled out next month. Our nurses are still in need of additional education pertaining to the components that the policies will include and the verbiage within the policies. We need a stronger deliverance of communication from leadership to ensure we have a methodical and confident way of entering this new change initiative. Gardner, D. B. (2005). Discussion 2: Collaboration is the method where two or more people work together in an organization to accomplish a goal while requiring the quality of leadership. According to the article, the concept of collaboration has been debated for a long time in the health care setting. Advantages are well proven. In order to work with other in the best way possible, it is important to constantly improve one’s collaboration skills. These skills involve identifying a diverse set of perceptions, managing priorities from each person in a group, and gathering anticipations as a dependable member of a group. Effective collaborations involve a mutual attitude and shared respect. Employers usually seek out workers that operate efficiently as piece of a team and are prepared to balance out personal accomplishment with group goals. They include communicating openly, actively listening to others, taking accountability for errors, and recognizing the diversity of coworkers. The advantages of collaborations for any organizations are vital in order to have the best team outcome. However, it comes with a few obstacles. A lack of responsibility among individuals and an ineffective communication are among a variety of obstacles that hinder the success in an organization. When I worked with orthopedic patients, I witnessed an effective collaboration approach. The team used their knowledge and skills to work together towards a common patient’s goal. Every Tuesday the team meets with doctors, nurses, physical, speech and occupational therapist, as well as social workers. The team’s approach enables constructive outcomes, ensuring the desires of the patient and the patient’s family are completely met. One of the best examples of collaboration that I have experienced is the morning rounds in the ICU. The intensivist, pharmacist, dietitian, respiratory therapist, social worker, charge nurse, and assigned nurse attend patient rounds. They physically go from room to room discussing the patient’s status, any changing needs and future interventions. One of the benefits of collaboration is that communication can be clear and direct, saving time and reaching positive outcomes faster. Another benefit is that the patient receives the best possible care because there is a multidisciplinary team discussing their case, and each member can use their expertise to the patient’s benefit. A challenge to collaboration is that it can be difficult to get the entire team together or to have communication issues. I have noticed on my unit that because this level of collaboration is expected, it has been integrated into the workflow. So increased collaboration may require a culture shift. Like the staff members at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2011), the birth center where I will be doing my capstone also does home visits. The most important member of the team to collaborate with is the patient themselves. When patients are given agency and information regarding their healthcare they are better able to make their needs known as it relates to the environment they live in and how that impacts their health. The birth center does postpartum visits 24-48 hours after birth to assess the baby and their parents. This time allows for the patients and family to discuss concerns and to have support given.
