Six Sigma principles are used in a range of industries to improve process efficiency by eliminating waste and reducing defects which can lead to happier customers and increased revenue. In the health care industry, defects not only affect revenue and customer satisfaction, but they can also mean the difference between life and death.

Six Sigma Requires Five Steps for Quality Improvement

1) Define: Who are the patients, and what do they want? What are the capabilities of the process being measured? What are our objectives?

2) Measure: What will improvement look like? On what data will our efforts be measured? Metrics used to define performance in a healthcare organization often include service level, service cost, patient satisfaction, and clinical excellence.

3) Analyze: Collect data and analyze using proven tools.

4) Improve: Implement modifications to improve the process.

5) Control: Monitor performance to maintain improvement (Villanova University, 2021).

Using Six Sigma to improve health care efficiency and profitability can:

1) Shorten wait times in hospitals and private practices.

2) Prevent falls and injuries in hospitals and nursing homes.

3) Reduce medication errors when prescribing and administering drugs or filling prescriptions.

4) Increase turnaround time for lab results (Purdue University, 2021).

Overall, Six Sigma management tools will help health care organization increase their efficiency and profitability by optimizing operations and increase value by eliminating wastes and reducing defects to achieve high-quality health care towards patients and reduces any errors that may end up being costly.
